Lesson 2: More Purple Cow Dreams, Flow Chart, Back of Napkin Pic

2nd day of class

Arrange in same flight pattern (seating arrangement)—review names—mk sure pronounce correctly

Meditate: flow (tie to flow chart)

Review:

Intro: make sure we’re in sync, that our expectations are clear

What is a dream culture?

What’s the pt of the purple cow?
Other eg’s of purple cows from bb—in modules and wiki…purpose is to see what purple cows look like and to provide inspiration…you can piggy back on any of these ideas…
solar oven, edible landscape, hiit (google fitness blender), biomodulator, dynamind, nvc language (Rosenberg), survival (Tom Brown), 5 rhythms (Roth), life saver bottle (clean drinking water)
another way to get a purple cow is to id a problem and then think of a soln. food for the poor (25K die per day of starvation), flooding in Hampton Roads…let them talk about the ones that they viewed outside of class, then you fill in the blanks
before next class add your purple cow dream to the wiki—accountability, plus a place where people from class can see what you’re working on and support you through resources they may find…help each other when you can, esp. if it’s an area of interest for you

format: name, title, brief description below…do an e.g. on bb so they can see how to access, edit, save

What are the take home points on the traditional academic research culture? This is what you’re being indoctrinated into rt now in probably almost every class you take at odu…gold journal article, parts lit rev, method, results, disc

This teaching method is new for me (my purple cow), so I need some feedback to make sure we understand each other, to ck out your sense of what’s going on in class…so what are you expected to do in this class? What are you graded on?

Any questions re: syllabus? I want you to succeed in here, but to do so, you have to understand the game plan.
Go through the links on the syllabus…any discussion/questions…?

How did you do on your first journal entry…ask for examples of how people set them up…remind minimum requirements: data, what did you do, how did you feel about it…other things to include for your edification…let them talk…reminder that you turn these in at 2 pts in the term, so need to be able to print a hard copy and hand in

Only write about what you think is important/valuable, and if you can’t think of anything from the last class or your homework assignment, then take responsibility for your own learning and GO after it, find something relevant that is important/valuable to you to write about, don’t let the class topics be the limit to your learning, explore…don’t say, I couldn’t find anything interesting to write about, you have the sum total of all wisdom from all cultures at your fingertips, go find something interesting to write about if you don’t get anything from what we covered in class.

Which method of Shawn Achor did you test out last week? How did it go? Recall only 2 mins a day for 21 days to re-wire your brain for positivity (and recall all the benefits…it TURNS ON all your learning centers !)…I challenge you to take this on, to make it a priority, I believe it will help you in creating and fulfilling your dream…I personally do all of the 5 methods every week, several of them I do daily.

Sharing your dreams…

Ideas for creating a supportive dream environment
Ideas for sharing our dreams…share in groups, get prelim fdbck, then share as a class
Let people talk in groups, then individually…times to meet with me

We are here to support each others’ dreams…if you have info that will help someone please forward it to them on index card, paper, e-mail, talk to during break, after class, or post to the class wiki where they have their dream project idea on bb…

Also as I put these on the white board, if you have similar dreams, consider working in pairs or small groups, or for some of you that haven’t committed to a dream yet, this may spark some ideas for you…1/2 baked and sketchy dreams are welcome, we will work with them and show you the potential, the only limits here are our imagination
let people talk…ask questions [maybe later before turn in proposal, do a notecard activity—update on the dream and fdbck from class in form of notecards—put your name on the notecard (if you’re willing to talk with the person about your feedback)…include pos and critical fdback…write as much as you can to help each person

Make sure meet the purple cow criterion

Put the ideas on the white board with a word/phrase, and then id groups that could in principle work together…pros and cons of working in groups

Break

Goal for the next week:

Break dream down into parts and choose part that you could manage in the course of 4 weeks for this term

Create a FLOW CHART, time line, do e.g. from one of the dreams…sequence of activities or steps needed to complete the dream…show an example using feeding the hungry or solar oven—show on white board…may not know yet, okay, just list all the activities you think you need to do to accomplish your dream, and then try to put them in order from beginning to end.
do you have other ideas of how to do this?

Another idea for working with your dream, making it more concrete:
DRAW A PICTURE of the part of your dream that you want to work with for next class and be ready to explain the details of it…Show Dan Roam video and where to get his other videos
Give them time to work on time line and picture in class…want to see a picture before you leave

Hwk: Articulate revised dream, create flow chart, id what part of dream want to work with, draw a picture of it

2nd journal entry by next class
